Thane: Online dating proved costly for a 53-year-old businessman from Navi Mumbai as he was allegedly cheated of Rs 33.3 lakh by the woman he befriended on the dating app, police said on Sunday. The accused woman has been identified as Pragati Dahiya.
According to sources, Dahiya contacted the businessman on a dating app, and they met and communicated on WhatsApp between March and July 2024. Sources revealed that the accused lured him into lending her Rs 33.3 lakh whenever they met in five months.
Based on a complaint by the businessman from Ghansoli, a case was registered at the Cyber police station on Friday under sections 319(2) (cheating by personation) and 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act, news agency PTI citing an official reported.
When the accused failed to return the money, the complainant approached the police, the official said, adding that a probe is underway and no arrest has been made yet.
In a separate incident, a Tinder date turned costly for a man from Thane as he was scammed by both his date and the restaurant.
The man, who claimed that he was out at a restaurant for a meal with his date, ended up receiving a whopping bill of Rs 44,000. The incident was shared on Reddit with a picture of the hefty bill.
