Cybercrimes are on the rise across the country. Recently, a Chandigarh woman lost Rs 80 lakh to a SIM card scam. She reportedly received a call from a fraudster posing as a police officer who told her that a SIM card registered against her Aadhaar card was allegedly being used in illegal activities. The victim, fearing arrest, agreed to the caller’s demand and transferred the money.
According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) guidelines, a user can obtain up to nine mobile numbers on a single ID. An Aadhaar card is one of the most commonly accepted documents by telecom operators for issuing new SIM cards.
Fraudulent cases of people using someone else’s Aadhaar information are increasing. DoT has launched an online portal - Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection (TAF-COP), to check how many mobile numbers are registered with their Aadhaar cards.
Here’s how to check how many SIM cards are issued against your Aadhaar card
- Visit the TAFCOP website: https://tafcop.sancharsaathi.gov.in/telecomUser/
- Enter your Mobile number in the given box
- Enter the captcha and click on “request OTP.”
- Enter the OTP and click on “Log in.”
- You will see a list of mobile numbers registered on your ID.
- Check and ensure that all the active mobile numbers belong to you or your relatives.
- In case of any doubt, this website gives 03 options; “Not my number”, “Not required” and “Required”.
The TAF-COP portal also lets you report and block the numbers that are not yours. You can report a number that is registered with your ID and does not belong to any of your family members by clicking “Not my number”.
