One prevalent scam is the 'UPI overpayment scam.' Imagine you are in the middle of a hectic day at the office. You receive a call from an unknown number, with the caller claiming to have accidentally sent you Rs 20,000 and urgently needing it back due to a medical emergency. The caller has initiated a money collection request on your UPI app, urging you to clear the payment immediately. Under pressure and feeling empathetic, you might transfer the money without verifying the details. Later, you discover that the caller only sent Rs 200, but you mistakenly transferred Rs 20,000.How to Stay Protected from UPI Overpayment Scams
1. Double-check Payment Requests: Before approving any UPI request, always verify the sender and the nature of the request. Be wary of unexpected payment requests.
2. Verify Sender Details: If you receive a payment request from an unknown source or for an unexpected amount, confirm the sender's details through a call or message before proceeding.
3. Cautious with Unsolicited Messages: Scammers often send unsolicited messages with misleading claims. Verify the sender's identity and the purpose of the transaction before responding to or approving requests.
4. Don't Feel Pressurized: Never rush into money transfers based on phone calls, especially from unknown numbers. Scammers often use urgency and emotional manipulation to exploit victims. Stay vigilant and protect your money.
