New Delhi. Citing some practical difficulties, the bank selling electoral bonds, State Bank of India (SBI), has appealed to the Supreme Court to give it time till June 30, 2024 to make public the details of the electoral bonds purchased from April 12, 2019. Go.
In its decision on February 15, a five-member Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud had termed this scheme of giving donations to political parties as opaque and had canceled it, terming it unconstitutional.
The bench had asked SBI to submit all the information (related to SBI bonds) including political parties receiving electoral bonds and other related details to the Election Commission by March 6, 2024. The court had also directed to put the information given by SBI on the website of the Election Commission.
However, bank SBI, which sells electoral bonds, has sought extension of the deadline citing some practical difficulties with the decoding exercise and the deadline set for it by the apex court.
Through an application before the apex court, SBI has said that 22,217 electoral bonds were used to make donations to various political parties between April 12, 2019 and the date of judgment i.e. February 15, 2024.
SBI told the top court that the redeemed bonds were deposited by the authorized branches in Mumbai main branch at the end of each phase in sealed envelopes. Coupled with the fact that two different information silos exist. This means that a total of 44,434 information sets have to be decoded, compiled and compared.
Placing these facts before the court, SBI said, “Therefore, the time limit of three weeks fixed by the court in its judgment will not be sufficient to complete the entire process.”
