SBI has filed a petition in the court seeking extension of time till June 30 to submit details of electoral bonds. The Supreme Court had earlier asked the SBI to submit the details by March 6.

State Bank of India (SBI) has sought more time from the Supreme Court to share electoral bond details with the Election Commission. A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by SBI. They were asked to be given time till June 30 to provide the electoral bond information. The Supreme Court on February 15 struck down the electoral bond scheme and directed the SBI to submit information about the electoral bond to the Election Commission by March 6.

SBI had sought time till June 30

SBI has filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking for time till June 30 to provide information about electoral bonds. The petition states that 22217 election bonds have been issued between April 12, 2019 and February 15, 2024. These bonds are issued to donate to various political parties.

This application stated

“Decoding” the election bonds and matching the funds provided by donors will be a complicated process, the petition said. In a historic judgment on February 15, the court termed the electoral bond scheme to finance politics as ‘unconstitutional’ and directed it to provide information about the donors, bond values ​​and their recipients.

The Supreme Court gave a historic verdict

In its verdict months before the Lok Sabha elections, the Supreme Court ordered the SBI to disclose the names of donors in the six-year-old scheme to the Election Commission. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud directed that the SBI has to provide details of all election bonds paid by political parties. It said the details should also include the date on which the bonds were encashed and the amount. Also, complete details have to be submitted before the Election Commission by March 6.
