“Cardboard is, interestingly, very attractive to cockroaches. Researchers who study cockroaches even use cardboard as a harborage, which is where we keep them living,” said Aaron Ashbrook, an assistant professor of urban and peri-urban entomology at Louisiana State University, as quoted by HuffPost.
Cockroaches can eat cardboard and absorb moisture from it, particularly when the material is damp. Its absorbent surface can also retain odors from cockroach pheromones, making it more appealing to the pests.

Corrugated cardboard, commonly used for delivery boxes, is especially suitable for cockroaches because its ridges and grooves create narrow spaces where they can hide. Boxes are also often stored in dark, overlooked areas, allowing infestations to develop unnoticed.
To reduce the risk of attracting cockroaches, avoid keeping cardboard boxes around for long periods and inspect stored boxes regularly. If possible, keep delivery boxes outside or in the garage, and avoid opening them in areas such as the kitchen or bathroom, where cockroaches can find warmth, moisture, food and hiding spots
. After unpacking, break down the boxes and recycle or dispose of them as soon as possible to eliminate potential hiding places, according to Real Simple.
