EPF Partial Withdrawal Rules: The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made the rules for partial withdrawals from PF accounts significantly simpler and more transparent for its crores of subscribers. Under the new regulations, the process and limits for withdrawing funds for essential purposes—such as illness, children's education, marriage, and purchasing or constructing a home—have been clearly defined.
According to the new guidelines issued by the EPFO, advance claims are now primarily categorized into three groups: essential needs, housing needs, and special circumstances. Let us understand what has changed for salaried individuals under these new rules and how often—and how much—money can be withdrawn from a PF account.
Rules regarding essential needs
The EPFO has set specific limits and frequency criteria for these three important needs:
Illness: There is no limit on withdrawing an advance from the PF for medical emergencies or treatment. Members can withdraw funds for medical treatment whenever the need arises.
Children's Education: A PF advance for higher education or educational expenses can be availed up to a maximum of 10 times during the entire tenure of service.
Marriage: Members can make withdrawals up to a maximum of 5 times during their entire service period for their own marriage or the marriage of their children/siblings.
Housing-related expenses
All housing-related needs have now been consolidated under a single common category. This includes purchasing a house or plot, constructing a house, repaying home loan installments, or carrying out home repairs and renovations. Members can claim an advance for housing-related needs up to a maximum of 5 times during their entire membership period.
Special circumstances
Separate provisions have also been made for specific crises or emergencies. Under this category, an advance can be withdrawn up to a maximum of two times in a financial year, subject to applicable terms and conditions.
How much money (funds) can be withdrawn from the PF account?
According to the latest EPFO circular, eligible members can withdraw up to 75% of their total EPF balance as an advance, based on the conditions applicable to the respective category. Minimum Service Period: To avail of the advance, it is mandatory for a member to have been an EPFO member for at least 12 months (1 year).
Difference between Advance and Final Settlement: Please note that this is merely an advance that can be withdrawn while still employed. It is entirely distinct from the 'final PF settlement' that takes place after leaving a job.
How will this change impact salaried individuals?
This new and clear framework makes it much easier for employees to understand when, why, and how often they can utilize their retirement funds. Withdrawing money from the PF for needs such as recurring college fees for children, sudden medical emergencies, or home loan repayments will now be far more convenient than before.
