Britain is currently facing a major constitutional crisis. They face a great challenge to protect future integrity. All three independent states – Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – are demanding a referendum to break the chain of Britain. The leaders of these three countries are going to hold a meeting in Cardiff, Wales on Monday. Not only that, sources also said that they may sign a joint declaration to increase pressure on Westminster.
Scotland's First Minister John Sweeney, Wales' First Minister Rune-up Yoreth and Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill are meeting at the conference in Cardiff. They are joined by Irish opposition leader and Sinn Féin president Mary Lou Macdonald. The joint declaration, which these leaders are about to sign, clearly states that all three regions have the right to democratically determine their constitutional future and call a referendum on independence or integration. All three parties are staunchly opposed to Brexit. Northern Ireland wants to rejoin the European Union as an independent state, joining with Scotland and Wales and Ireland.
Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently told parliament that if there was a 'clear public opinion or consensus' among the people of Scotland, he might consider allowing another independence referendum. Using his comments, independence leaders increased the pressure on the Central Government (Westminster) in London. US President Donald Trump commented during his recent visit to Dublin that he would like to see a 'united Ireland'. This further encouraged the Irish leaders. Ultimately, the legal and constitutional power to hold any referendum still rests with the UK government. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has also already written to Scotland's leaders saying there is no room to discuss an independence referendum before the next general election and that the government's main focus is now on economic growth and public services.
