Inde Navarrette recalls her ‘Obsession’ audition: ‘I bombed it’

Inde Navarrette landed a career defining role in Obsessionbut the actress admitted she wasn’t convinced she had secured the role when she first auditioned.

As the indie horror hit, which was released in May, celebrated its success with a panel at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 11, the 25-year-old actress and writer-director Curry Barker looked back on how she landed the lead role of Nikki.

Inde said she was eager to take on something completely different from anything she had done before. The actress previously starred in The CW’s Superman & Lois from 2021 to 2024.

“I wanted to do something completely different than I’d ever done before,” she explained. “I felt like I had this fire in my belly that I just wanted to show people what I could do and I didn’t have yet the opportunity.”

Inde found what she was looking for in the 26-year-old filmmaker and comedian’s Obsession script, which follows a hopeless romantic whose magical wish to win over his crush takes a chaotic turn.

“I was like, ‘Wow, what range and what endless things that you can do with Nikki,'” she recalled thinking at the time.

When it came to the auditions and chemistry reads however, Inde assumed she had ‘bombed’ it.

“I did a Zoom. I thought I bombed it,” she admitted.

Meanwhile, Curry had other thoughts, who said, “We met on Zoom and it was pretty electric. We were like ‘Oh my Gosh.'”

“I was lucky enough that he saw something in me that I didn’t feel like I had shown,” Inde said, before addressing the crowd, “If anybody’s an actor here thinks that they do a bad job, maybe you didn’t.”
