Lucas Bergvall has signed a new contract with Tottenham, committing his future to the club.

The 20-year-old has already made 80 appearances in all competitions for Spurs and has earned 14 senior caps for Sweden, including an appearance at this summer’s World Cup.

He had been strongly linked with a move away during the summer, with Nottingham Forest and Newcastle both interested, but he has now signed a new deal.

“I think we’re building something great here,” Bergvall said. “It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract.

“Personally, my goal is to contribute more for the team – performances, goals and assists – and help as much as I can. I’m improving every day in training and I’m looking forward to what should be a really good season ahead.”

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi also praised Bergvall’s mentality and said he believes there is still much more to come from the young midfielder.

“Every day in training you can see Lucas’ desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level,” the Spurs boss said.

“Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments.

“I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”
