In most of the cases this does not happen suddenly, the car first gives light jerks, the speed starts decreasing and only then the engine of the car stops.

Running out of petrol while the car is moving not only affects the engine but also other parts of the car. In fact, when the petrol runs out and the car suddenly stops, the fuel pump suffers more damage. Usually the fuel pump is immersed in petrol, due to which the presence of petrol works to keep the pump cool and lubricate it. As soon as the fuel tank becomes empty, the pump gets heated and rotates. Due to this it can spoil quickly.

If you look at it, when the car jerks after running out of petrol, it affects not only the engine but also the fuel tank. Actually, when the tank becomes empty, the dirt reaches the filter of the fuel pump and jams it. This increases the risk of the fuel filter getting clogged or dirt getting into the fuel injector.
