Kolkata, 14 September 2026: After examining the infrastructure facilities of Madrassas in West Bengal, the state government has taken a big step. In the first phase of investigation, closure notices have been issued to 252 madrassas without government approval. Most of these are said to be 'Khariji Madrasas'. Apart from this, show cause notices have been issued to about 100 madrassas.

According to the information, about 2396 madrassas in the state do not have government approval. After examining the existing infrastructure facilities, curriculum and information to students of these institutions, the department has initiated action against the institutions operating without permission.

On July 22, the State Minority and Madrasa Education Department had conducted a survey of Madrasas in all the districts including Calcutta. In the same survey report, information was revealed that about 2396 madrassas did not have government approval. During the investigation, it was decided to close 252 madrassas without permission. Copies of the notice have been sent to the District Magistrates of the respective districts.

In the 100 madrassas to which show cause notices have been issued, deficiencies in infrastructural facilities have also been observed. The department has made it clear that if these institutions are not able to justify their management, then strict action will be taken against them.

Minister Khudiram Tudu said that documents have been collected from all the madrassas of 22 districts of the state including Kolkata. He said that the madrassas which have received government approval will remain functional.

In this matter, Minister Dilip Ghosh said that many complaints have been received regarding madrassas and their investigation is going on. Madrasas functioning with the approval of the government will continue, but permission will not be given to open any madrasa anywhere without approval. He said that action has been started in this direction.
