The second phase of the PhD admission process at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is expected to begin by the end of next month. Significant changes will be observed in the admission process this time. If the number of applications for PhD seats in a particular department far exceeds the available seats, a preliminary screening of candidates may be conducted. Subsequently, shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview. Additionally, preparations are underway to create a combined merit list for candidates from both main and allied subjects. This move is expected to provide more admission opportunities for students interested in research.

**Screening Likely if Applications are High**
The process of compiling details regarding vacant PhD seats at BHU has commenced. During this second admission phase, if a course receives an exceptionally high volume of applications, the concerned department may conduct a screening test. This arrangement was finalized during the Academic Council meeting held in May of this year.

In fact, for certain subjects, as many as eight candidates were vying for a single seat. Under such circumstances, conducting direct interviews for all candidates could prove difficult; hence, the option to limit the number of candidates through an initial screening process has been introduced. However, the final decision on whether or not to conduct the screening rests with the relevant committee.

**PhD Admissions Twice a Year**
BHU introduced a system this year to conduct PhD admissions twice annually. The objective is to provide an opportunity to candidates who could not participate in the initial admission cycle. The university administration is emphasizing making the admission process streamlined, student-centric, and transparent.

For the second phase, arrangements are also being made to prepare a combined merit list for candidates from main and allied subjects. Information regarding available seats is also being gathered prior to the admission process.

**Three BHU Professors Named NASI Fellows**
Three faculty members from BHU's Institute of Science have been elected as Fellows of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) for the year 2026. They include Prof. Shashi Pandey (Botany), Prof. Prakash Kumar Singh (Geology), and Prof. Rajendra Kumar Singh (Head of the Physics Department). All three will be formally inducted during the NASI annual session scheduled to be held at BHU in December.
