Tezzbuzz Desk- Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi on Friday. This was the second meeting of the two leaders this year. Earlier, both had met during the 26th SCO summit held in Bishkek on 31 August 2026.

In this meeting held on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, cooperation between India and Russia in areas like political, economic, defence, energy, space, skill development and people-to-people contacts was reviewed. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues along with further strengthening bilateral relations.

Discussion on Russia-Ukraine and Iran war

The ongoing conflict in Iran along with the Russia-Ukraine war was also discussed during the meeting. The two leaders discussed the situation in West Asia and the Black Sea region. These conflicts are affecting maritime trade and the safety of citizens of different countries.

During this, the issue of Indian sailors stranded in Hormuz and Black Sea area was also raised. Both sides discussed the safety of Indian sailors and the challenges arising on sea routes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that resolution of conflicts is possible only through dialogue and diplomacy. He said that India is ready to provide all possible support in efforts to establish peace.

INNOPROM India welcomed

The two leaders also welcomed the international industrial exhibition 'INNOPROM India' organized for the first time in India. This exhibition was held between 9 to 11 September 2026. Its objective is to give a new direction to industrial, trade and investment relations between India and Russia.

Prime Minister Modi and President Putin visited the exhibition and interacted with the delegates participating in it. Both leaders acknowledged that such platforms can create new business opportunities between Indian and Russian companies.

Through INNOPROM India, emphasis is being laid on the possibilities of increasing cooperation in railways, steel, tunnel construction, technology and other industrial sectors. This is expected to further expand the economic partnership between the two countries.

Emphasis on increasing cooperation in BRICS

According to the statement of the Ministry of External Affairs, Prime Minister Modi and President Putin also discussed India-Russia cooperation in multilateral fora. The two leaders shared their views especially with regard to India's BRICS Chairmanship in the year 2026.

They also discussed major regional and global issues of mutual interest. Apart from the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, concerns of both the countries regarding maritime trade and safety of Indian sailors were also discussed.

Agreed to strengthen special strategic partnership

In the meeting, both the leaders agreed to further strengthen the 'special and privileged strategic partnership' between India and Russia. Cooperation between the two countries in the fields of defence, energy, trade and technology is continuously increasing.

Despite geopolitical uncertainties, India-Russia relations remain strong. Both sides stressed on taking forward cooperation based on mutual interests and continuing regular high-level dialogue.

Putin invited PM Modi to visit Russia

President Vladimir Putin invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Russia to attend the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit. Prime Minister Modi has accepted the invitation.

The date of the summit will be decided through diplomatic channels of both the countries as per mutual convenience. This meeting reflects the ever-strengthening relations between India and Russia and the commitment for high-level political dialogue.
