Manchester United will host their rivals in the first Manchester derby of the season.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has shed light on the substitutions of Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo ahead of this weekend’s high-profile meeting with Manchester City.
Both Tielemans and Mainoo were in the starting line-up for United’s 4-0 victory over Sabah on Thursday night, with Tielemans setting up Bruno Fernandes to make it 2-0 shortly before half-time.
But after Benjamin Sesko scored United’s third before the interval to put the home side firmly in control, Tielemans did not return for the second half and was replaced by Mason Mount.
Mainoo, meanwhile, was taken off shortly after the hour mark, with Andrey Santos coming on in his place.
Speaking to TNT Sports after Manchester United’s emphatic win on their return to the Champions League, Carrick said both substitutions were made in order to give Santos and Mount some game time.
“It’s nice as well to be able to get Andrey [Santos] and Mason [Mount] on for the second half,” Carrick said.
Kobbie Mainoo was able to be rested for the final 25 minutes against Sabah.
The United head coach may also have offered a clue about his selection for Sunday’s Manchester derby, with Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire all remaining unused substitutes at Old Trafford.
Luke Shaw, however, is a doubt after being left out of the matchday squad completely following a knock picked up in last weekend’s 2-2 draw away to Everton.
“It’s a little bit of that [managing him],” Carrick told TNT Sports before kick-off. “He came off the other day [at Everton] with a little bit of cramp. We didn’t want to take any risks really.
