Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira in New Delhi on Friday. The two leaders discussed India-Brazil relations as well as mutual cooperation at forums such as the United Nations (UN), G20 and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). During the meeting, the two Ministers also discussed the current global political situation and the role of BRICS 2026 in furthering dialogue and diplomacy.
S Jaishankar wrote on the social media platform ‘ “Exchanged views on the importance of BRICS 2026 in promoting diplomacy.”
Mauro Vieira reached New Delhi on Thursday. He has come to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit organized under the chairmanship of India on 12-13 September. To welcome him, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ post, “A warm welcome to Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, who has arrived in New Delhi to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit. India and Brazil have a long-standing strong friendship and the commitment of both the countries to increase cooperation between the countries of the Global South is also strong.”
Leaders of member countries, partner countries and special invitees will participate in the BRICS summit. The BRICS summit will bring together leaders of BRICS member countries, associate countries and outreach invited countries. BRICS includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. BRICS’s partner countries are: Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Earlier in February, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had come on a state visit to India. During that time he participated in the second AI Impact Summit and had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the discussions between PM Modi and Lula, emphasis was laid on further strengthening India-Brazil partnership on trade, economy, education, investment, digital technology, Global South and other multilateral issues.
