Amid the viral AI-driven 1980s trend on social media, veteran actor Anupam Kher took a nostalgic trip back to the decade when his cinematic journey began, recalling the unusual contrast between his real age and his debut role. Kher shared an old autographed photograph on Instagram and reflected on entering the film industry at the age of 28 while portraying a 65-year-old man in Mahesh Bhatt’s acclaimed film ‘Saaransh’. “IN 80’s I WAS 28 and 65…. Both!!” Kher wrote, recalling how he woke up in Vancouver to find people posting pictures from the 1980s. He said he had to search extensively before finding the old photograph. The actor noted that while he was only 28 when he entered films, his character in ‘Saaransh’ was 65. He described the experience as a reflection of the magic of photographs, makeup, performances and life, which allow actors to inhabit people of different ages while retaining their own identity. Kher described the 1980s as the decade when his journey in cinema began and celebrated the memories associated with the period. ‘Saaransh’, which also stars Rohini Hattangadi, Madan Jain, Nilu Phule, Suhas Bhalekar and Soni Razdan, revolves around an elderly Maharashtrian couple in Mumbai coming to terms with the death of their only son. The film marked Kher’s screen debut and was produced and distributed by Rajshri Productions. It was selected as India’s official entry for the 1985 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film but did not receive a nomination. Kher was last seen on screen in the 2025 film ‘Tanvi The Great’, which follows a 21-year-old woman on the autism spectrum who aspires to join the Indian Army and fulfil her late father’s dream of saluting the national flag at the Siachen Glacier.
