Ismail Kartal steps down! Fenerbahce coach resigns after Roma draw, but president Aziz Yildirim refuses to accept exit

Fenerbahce were thrown into complete turmoil after their Champions League meeting with Roma, as head coach Ismail Kartal unexpectedly declared his immediate resignation. However, club president Aziz Yildirim stepped in within minutes, flatly refusing to accept the coach's decision and insisting that the 65-year-old would continue in his role.

Turkish giants in turmoil

Fenerbahce's opening night in Europe's top club competition turned chaotic after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Italian side Roma on Thursday evening. Although the team picked up a useful point, Kartal shocked everyone in the post-match press conference by announcing that he was resigning for what he said was the good of the club. But only minutes later, president Yildirim publicly overruled the move and maintained that the manager was still very much in charge.

President rejects surprise resignation

Kartal, whose contract runs until June 2027, said his decision to leave was meant to open the way for the squad. He said: "I have left my position tonight." Yildirim, though, moved quickly to stop the resignation, explaining that the manager was under heavy emotional pressure after being hit on the head by a bottle thrown from the crowd during the match. Confirming that the coach had been badly shaken by the incident, the president said: "He is upset about that."

Expectations rise after spending

The unrest inside the club comes at a time of soaring expectations after five straight second-place finishes in the Turkish Super Lig. The pressure increased even more following the high-profile summer arrivals of Mason Greenwood, Nathan Ake, Romelu Lukaku, and Vedat Muriqi to lead the campaign. Fenerbahce's return to the Champions League proper for the first time in 18 years has instead been overshadowed by intense scrutiny on social media, which has affected morale within the squad.

Tough continental tests ahead

Fenerbahce now need to sort out their internal crisis quickly before travelling to England to face Aston Villa on matchday two of the league phase on October 14. Roma also have a major challenge that same evening, when they host European heavyweights Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico. The upcoming fixture in Birmingham is set to be a clear test of Kartal's authority in an increasingly volatile atmosphere.
