Fetterman Appears at Republican Convention

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Democratic Sen. John Fetterman’s brief video appearance at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas has made his growing separation from Pennsylvania Democrats increasingly visible.

The prerecorded segment showed Fetterman on the roof of his home in Braddock, with U.S. Steel’s Edgar Thomson mill behind him.

His appearance supported one of the convention’s principal themes—that the Democratic Party has moved toward ideological extremes. Fetterman did not criticize an individual Democrat by name.

Fetterman Denies He Will Change Parties

The appearance renewed concern among some Democrats that Fetterman could eventually join the Republican Party.

Fetterman issued a statement later Wednesday saying he would remain a Democrat.

He had delivered a similar message during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity the previous week.

Fetterman has cited his support for labor unions, LGBTQ rights and other traditionally Democratic priorities as reasons he would not join the Republican Party. Senate records also show that his votes do not fall uniformly with Republicans, even though he has crossed party lines on several prominent matters.

White House Promotes Fetterman’s Message

After the video played, McCormick praised Fetterman from the convention stage.

A White House social-media account subsequently shared the video with the caption “Based John Fetterman.”

The appearance reflected Fetterman’s increasingly close relationship with McCormick. The two senators have participated in joint events and established a shared political fundraising committee, an unusual arrangement between senators from opposing parties.

Democratic Support Has Fallen Sharply

Fetterman was a prominent Democratic campaign surrogate during the 2024 electiontraveling throughout Pennsylvania to support party candidates.

He has not played a similar role during the 2026 campaign. Democratic officials and candidates say they have not asked him to appear with them.

Lehigh County includes competitive congressional and state Senate districts that Democrats hope to win.

A July Quinnipiac University poll found that 77% of Pennsylvania Republicans approved of Fetterman’s performancewhile 69% of Democrats disapproved. Overall, 48% of registered voters approved and 41% disapproved.

An August New York Times poll reported that approximately 2 in 10 registered Pennsylvania Democrats viewed Fetterman favorably, down from 74% in 2024. The same survey found that 73% of Republicans held a positive view, up from 25% two years earlier.

Some Democratic Voters Feel Betrayed

Cindy Durian, a Democrat voting in the May primary outside Harrisburg, said she would not support Fetterman again.

Democratic strategist J.J. Abbott also criticized Fetterman’s public posture toward the party.

Those comments reflect the speakers’ political assessments. They do not establish Fetterman’s motivation, and he maintains that his positions represent an independent approach rather than a rejection of his party.

Disagreements Extend Across Several Issues

Fetterman’s conflict with progressive Democrats initially became prominent in late 2023 because of his firm support for Israel’s war against Hamas.

Since Trump returned to office, Fetterman has also criticized Democratic Socialists of America members, supported several administration nominees and voted with Republicans to end the 2025 government shutdown.

He opposed congressional efforts to end the war with Iran and dismissed some Democratic strategies for resisting Trump’s agenda.

Official Senate records document votes in which Fetterman joined Republicans, as well as other votes in which he remained aligned with most Democrats.

Questions Raised About Senate Participation

Fetterman suffered a stroke while campaigning in 2022 and was hospitalized for clinical depression during the opening months of his Senate term.

More recently, questions have emerged about his attendance and participation. Reports showed that he accumulated missed votes and was absent from some committee hearings.

A meeting with teachers-union representatives ended after witnesses said Fetterman repeated himself, shouted and struck his hands against a desk. He has also missed public events, including the funeral of three police officers killed in the line of duty.

Fetterman’s office and political adviser did not respond to requests for comment for the AP report.

Some Pennsylvania public officials said they had not seen him in their communities for several years.

Pennsylvania Democrats Face Major Elections

Democrats have several important Pennsylvania contests in November.

Gov. Josh Shapiro is seeking reelection while leading efforts to retain the party’s narrow state House majority, win control of the state Senate and capture four Republican-held seats in the U.S. House.

In one competitive congressional race, Democrat Bob Harvie is challenging Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick. A Harvie campaign spokesperson said the candidate had not requested Fetterman’s assistance.

The absence represents a significant shift from 2024, when Fetterman was frequently requested as a campaign surrogate.

Potential 2028 Challengers Emerge

Fetterman has not confirmed whether he will seek another Senate term in 2028.

Democratic discussions about that election increasingly include Reps. Chris Deluzio and Brendan Boyle and former Rep. Conor Lamb. All three have publicly criticized Fetterman.

Deluzio said he would decide after the November midterms whether to seek the Senate seat.

The emerging interest does not guarantee that Fetterman will face a primary challenge. Candidate decisions and the political environment could change before 2028.

Fetterman Identifies an Israel “Red Line”

Although Fetterman has repeatedly said he intends to remain a Democrathe has also described one circumstance that could cause him to leave.

He said the Democratic Party becoming broadly opposed to Israel would represent a “red line” that would force him out.

What would qualify as the party becoming anti-Israel remains subject to his interpretation. Democratic officials hold a range of positions on Israel’s government, the Gaza war and U.S. military assistance.

Senate Control Raises the Stakes

Democrats currently hold 47 Senate seats and need a net gain of four in November to secure a 51-seat majority.

If Democrats reached 51 seats and Fetterman then joined the Republicans, the chamber could return to a 50-50 division. Vice President JD Vance would be able to cast tie-breaking votes, effectively giving Republicans organizational control.

Fetterman’s explicit statement that he will remain a Democrat weighs against that hypothetical scenario. His convention appearance nevertheless intensified speculation because of the narrow Senate margins.

Even without switching parties, he could wield considerable influence if Democrats controlled the chamber 51-49 and needed every member’s vote.

Republicans Say Fetterman Would Be Welcome

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said in July that Republicans had spoken with Fetterman about the “challenges” he faces within the Democratic caucus.

Fetterman’s subsequent statement rejected that possibility and affirmed that he would provide the 51st Democratic vote if the party won a narrow majority.

For now, his position remains unusual but explicit: he identifies as a Democrat, maintains several positions associated with the party and says he will remain in its caucus, while openly cooperating with Trump and Republicans on selected issues.
