Como head coach Cesc Fabregas called his team’s first Champions League match against RB Leipzig a historic moment for the club, while stressing that his players must approach it in the same way as any other game.

The Lariani will welcome the German side to the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Thursday evening for their maiden appearance in Europe’s top club competition, marking another major step in the club’s swift rise under Fabregas.

Speaking to Como TV before the evening kick-off, the Spanish coach spoke about the importance of the occasion.

“It is an important match for us, for our history, and for everyone at Como,” Fabregas said. “At the same time, we have to be ourselves and play a good game against a top team. Leipzig are very organised, so it will be a great test.”

Fabregas underlined that, despite the scale of the European fixture, he did not deliver any unusual team talk before the match because he did not want to disturb the balance of his squad.

“I didn’t say anything out of the ordinary,” Fabregas said. “If I said something different, they might think it’s a completely different kind of game. Instead, I want them to approach it exactly as we always do.”

On the task posed by the Bundesliga club, Fabregas added: “We analyse every opponent to see what they do well, but the most important thing is having the conviction that we need to play the perfect match to get three points in the Champions League. They have a very clear identity, clear structures, and very strong players across the pitch, both on the flanks and in central defence. But I believe in my team.”
