Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman may skip the upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi after Dhaka questioned whether he received a personal invitation or one linked to his role as the current BIMSTEC chair. The uncertainty has put the Bangladesh PM BRICS Summit participation under scrutiny.
India has invited Rahman to attend the summit’s outreach session in his capacity as the chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), according to reports.
However, Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir reportedly said that the invitation went to the BIMSTEC chair rather than specifically to the Bangladeshi prime minister.
“How shall we go? Has anyone from the Bangladesh government been invited? Our prime minister was not invited,” Kabir was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.
India Says Rahman Was Invited As BIMSTEC Chair
India has maintained that Rahman received an invitation to attend the BRICS outreach session because Bangladesh currently holds the BIMSTEC chair. The regional grouping includes India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand.
Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said there was no fresh update regarding confirmation from Dhaka about the Bangladeshi prime minister’s participation.
The Bangladesh PM BRICS Summit issue also comes after Rahman’s planned three-day official visit to India was postponed. Dhaka has said it is working to arrange a bilateral visit when the timing becomes conducive.

The uncertainty surrounding the Bangladesh PM BRICS Summit participation comes amid strained relations between New Delhi and Dhaka.
Tensions increased after India provided political asylum to former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India following her ouster during a youth-led uprising in August 2024.
