Galatasaray completed the signing of Rafael Leao from Serie A club AC Milan late in the summer transfer window, finally bringing an end to his long spell with the Italian side. The forward has already made his debut for the Turkish club and has now spoken openly about his departure from Milan.

Speaking to the media before the Champions League match against Sporting, Leao was naturally asked about his exit from the Rossoneri and he did not avoid the subject.

He said, while highlighting the role played by Ruben Amorim in helping him leave San Siro: “There are moments in life when things have to change. I played for AC Milan for seven years, and I think this summer was the time for a change of scenery. I had a conversation with Amorim; I’ve always been very open.”

Leao also said that the Milan manager made a strong positive impression on him despite their short time together.

“I didn’t know him. I’ve always heard positive things from my national teammates who played with him; they’ve always told me he’s an excellent coach and a spectacular person.”

Leao made it clear that Amorim gave him the opportunity to leave Milan and did not create any issues over the matter.

“And in the short time we were together, our relationship was excellent. I told him I wanted a change of scenery and he respected my decision. I’m leaving with a smile and the feeling of duty fulfilled.”

He also thanked Milan for the role the club played in taking him to this stage of his career.

“It’s a club that has given me so much and to which I have been able to give back. Today I’m a Galatasaray player and I hope that Milan can maintain a high level and win great things.”
