A high-level investigation has been completed in the case of death of three newborn babies in the fire that broke out in the neonatal special care room of Amravati District Women’s Hospital (Dufferin) on August 24. Based on the investigation report, the Health Department has suspended four officers and one employee. At the same time, instructions have been issued to blacklist two companies.

The investigation revealed that necessary repairs and maintenance of the ventilator were not done on time. The fire alarm and sprinkler systems were not working, while even the fire pump house was locked. Serious deficiencies were also found in the maintenance and technical inspection of medical equipment. For this negligence, irresponsible attitude and lapse, instructions have been given to suspend Akola Circle Deputy Health Director Dr. Sushil Kumar, Inspector in-charge of Dufferin Dr. Vinod Pawar, Additional District Surgeon Dr. Arun Salunkhe, Dufferin Administrative Officer Sandeep Targe and Electrical Technician Gokul Rathod. Instructions have also been given to take administrative action against the contractor employees and to take action against the responsible officers of the Public Works Department.

The blame fell on these companies

In the report of the inquiry committee, instructions have been given to start the process of blacklisting M/s AOV International LLP. At the same time, after prima facie flaws were found in the services of Shilar Company, instructions have been given to immediately obtain the forensic report and blacklist the company.

The government has appreciated the courage of the officers and employees who risked their lives in taking the newborn babies in danger to a safe place during the fire. Instructions have also been given to respect such officers and employees.
