Bharat Ratna awardee and eminent scientist Prof CNR Rao has been issued a notice during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Karnataka after his name was flagged for a spelling mismatch.
mn The discrepancy arose when the current rolls recorded his name as “Proff CNR Rao” instead of “Prof CNR Rao.” Officials termed it a “self‑name mismatch,” a situation where details from older rolls do not align with the present records.
The 92‑year‑old scientist, celebrated for his pioneering work in solid‑state and structural chemistry, has been asked to appear for a hearing in Malleshwaram, near the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
Prof Rao is one of India’s most decorated scientists, recipient of the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Shri, and Karnataka Ratna. He has played a key role in shaping India’s science policies, having served on advisory councils to multiple Prime Ministers. He also headed the IISc and founded the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR).
The notice has drawn attention to the importance of accuracy in electoral records, even for the country’s most distinguished citizens.
