More than 57.52 lakh voters were registered to vote in this phase. The fate of 20,623 candidates for the post of councilor in 5,393 wards was sealed in EVMs. Voting started at 7 am and continued till 6 pm. The State Election Commission had set up a total of 7,683 polling stations for voting.

Highest turnout in Sikri, big cities lag behind

In the first phase of voting, the most special picture emerged from small cities and towns. Sikri municipality in Deeg district recorded 86.25 per cent voting, the highest in data available till 3 pm. After this, 86.18 percent voting took place in Sampau municipality of Dholpur and 86.03 percent voting took place in the hill municipality of Deeg. 83.99 percent voting was also recorded in Arnod Municipality of Pratapgarh and 82.04 percent voting was recorded in Balesar Satta Municipality of Jodhpur.
On the contrary, voter participation in big municipal corporations was relatively low. Till 3 pm, 49.44 percent voting was recorded in Bhilwara Municipal Corporation, which was the lowest among 162 bodies of the state at that time. Voting was 52.35 percent in Alwar Municipal Corporation, 56.76 percent in Bikaner and 58.19 percent in Bharatpur Municipal Corporation.

Voting figures became a topic of discussion in the state

During the initial hours of voting, the pace of voting in the state remained normal, but in the afternoon, an increase in the voting percentage was seen. Till 1 pm, 50.38 percent voting was recorded in the state. At that time, Sikri municipality of Deeg was leading with 81.28 percent voting.
By 3 pm the average voting in the state increased to 63.55 percent and by evening this figure reached 72.9 percent. This increase shows that voters turned to polling stations in large numbers as the day progressed.

More enthusiasm seen in small towns

The biggest political picture of the first phase of voting was that voters in small cities and town areas showed more enthusiasm than those in big municipal corporations. Voting in many municipalities reached above 80 percent, while voting in four big municipal corporations remained below the state average.
Voters also showed great enthusiasm in the 18 urban bodies included in the first phase of the capital Jaipur district. Till 1 pm, the average voting in Jaipur district was 60.44 percent. Kanota municipality led with 71.67 percent voting, while Sambhar recorded 49.87 percent voting.

Uproar and EVM complaints at some places

Voting was peaceful at most places, but incidents of controversy and uproar were also reported from some places. There was an incident of stone pelting during voting in Nagaur, while there was a dispute in Bhilwara over allegations of fake voting. Complaints of technical faults in EVMs were also reported at some polling stations. The administration and police reached the spot and took control of the situation.

Now the turn of second phase on 11th September

Rajasthan’s urban body elections are being held in two phases. The first phase of voting concluded on September 9, while the second phase of voting will be held on September 11. After both the phases, counting of votes will take place on September 14 and the results will be revealed. After this, the process of election of the body president and vice president will take place.

The first phase of urban elections in Rajasthan has clearly indicated that this time the enthusiasm for democracy in small towns has outweighed that in big cities. Now the eyes are on the second phase of September 11 and the election results on September 14.
