NEW DELHI:
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday accused the Narendra Modi government of failing to protect the people of Manipur, saying they were suffering both within the State and outside it.
Kharge’s remarks came after the alleged lynching of Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh by a mob in Delhi.
In a post on X, Kharge condemned the killing and described it as another reminder of what he alleged was growing lawlessness under the BJP government.
He said students remained unsafe, women faced atrocities and people from the Northeast continued to face discrimination. He also alleged that Dalits, Adivasis and minorities remained vulnerable.
Kharge specifically targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that Delhi had become a “crime capital” and referring to National Crime Records Bureau data on crime in the national capital.
The Congress president expressed condolences to Singh’s family and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.
Police have arrested seven people and detained a juvenile in connection with the killing.
Singh was allegedly beaten to death late Sunday night by a group of men outside his residence in Delhi’s Kilokari village following a dispute over noise and nuisance, according to the report.
