The Delhi High Court has sought response from the Central Government, Delhi Government and DU on a PIL filed demanding provision of hostel facilities in all the colleges of Delhi University after the building accident that took place on September 6 in Satya Niketan, South Delhi. Whose next hearing will be on 25th September. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued a notice on a PIL demanding to provide hostel facilities for students in all the colleges under Delhi University in the capital.
of South Delhi On Wednesday, the court directed the concerned parties to file an affidavit on a petition filed after the collapse of a five-storey PG or hostel building in Satya Niketan. This PIL raised the issue of the “long-standing lack” of affordable and adequate institutional hostel facilities for students studying in Delhi University.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia has sought answers from all the parties. Also, the next hearing of the case has been ordered on 25th September.
The bench also raised questions on making UGC a respondent in the petition. The court directed to remove the name of UGC from the petition. The court clearly told the petitioner that there is no need to make UGC a party in this case.
Considering the PIL as a very serious issue, the petition states that despite the lapse of more than 104 years since the establishment of the University and the huge increase in the number of students and geographical spread, the living facilities have not developed commensurately.
The petitioner has sought a college-wise comprehensive assessment of the needs of Delhi University students and the existing hostel capacity. Apart from this, it has also been demanded through the petition that hostels should be built or expanded in the colleges where land is available. For colleges that lack land, facilities should be arranged on government or university land.
