Jamie Carragher says Erling Haaland can reach historic 1,000-goal mark after Champions League brace

Jamie Carragher has said he believes Erling Haaland can end his career with more than 1,000 goals after the Manchester City forward scored twice in the Champions League victory over Porto.

Haaland’s brace gave Enzo Maresca’s side a 2-0 win in their opening match of the competition, with the 26-year-old now standing as the club’s third-highest goalscorer of all time.

The Norway striker already has 322 goals from 407 senior club appearances, along with 62 goals in 55 matches for his country, and still has many years ahead of him at the highest level.

Carragher feels that the remarkable milestone is firmly within Haaland’s reach, especially because he believes the striker may still improve further.

“I just can’t see Haaland not scoring 1000 goals or being the best goalscorer of all time,” the former Liverpool defender said on CBS Sports. “I have never seen anything like it in terms of goals and numbers and it is every game.

“But because he does it so often, it does not feel that big. He has just scored two goals away from home in the Champions League and any other striker does that it is an amazing night. It just feels like a normal night.

“I just can’t see how he does not end up being the greatest goalscorer or getting the most goals we have ever seen anybody get.”

The record for the highest number of goals scored by a male footballer remains somewhat uncertain. Pele’s claim of having scored more than 1,000 goals during his career is widely disputed because it includes several friendlies and unofficial matches. However, the Brazilian played in an era when such fixtures carried greater importance and were more competitive than they are now.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also moving closer to that landmark, having gone past 900 goals in 2024 while playing for Al Nassr.

Haaland will next be in action in the Manchester derby, with City set to travel to United on Sunday.
