Production has officially wrapped on The Bell Jar, Sarah Polley’s highly anticipated adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s acclaimed 1963 novel, with Grammy-winning singer Billie Eilish making her feature-film debut in a leading role.

Backed by Focus Features and Plan B Entertainment, the psychological drama was filmed in Toronto and is now moving into post-production. While the studio has yet to announce an official release date, the completion of principal photography marks a major step forward for a project that has attracted considerable attention because of its source material and star-studded cast.

Eilish leads the film alongside Connor Storrie, who plays Marco, a character from Plath’s novel. The cast also includes Danielle Deadwyler as Dr. Nolan and Carey Mulligan as Mrs. Greenwood. Additional ensemble members include Ike Barinholtz, Dylan Hawco, Lili Taylor, Ella Beatty and Maggie Kuntz.

At the centre of the story is Esther Greenwood, a talented young woman whose experiences gradually become entangled with depression, societal expectations and a growing sense of isolation. Plath’s novel, widely regarded as one of the defining works of 20th-century American literature, has long been recognised for its candid exploration of mental health and the pressures placed on women.

Polley, an Oscar-winning filmmaker known for works including Women Talking and Stories We Tell, is directing the adaptation from her own screenplay. Her involvement has generated interest among literary and film audiences alike, particularly given the deeply personal and psychologically complex nature of Plath’s work.

For Eilish, the project represents a significant transition from music into acting. The singer has previously appeared in music- visual projects and documentaries, but The Bell Jar places her in a demanding dramatic role within a major feature production.

The film’s themes are expected to remain closely connected to the emotional and psychological concerns at the heart of Plath’s original work. With production now complete, attention will turn to the editing and post-production process before Focus Features determines its release strategy.

No premiere date has been announced, leaving audiences waiting for their first official look at Eilish’s interpretation of the iconic literary material. The adaptation is nevertheless shaping up to be one of the more closely watched literary dramas currently heading toward release.
