Enzo Fernandez is eager to keep building his understanding with Erling Haaland after the striker’s brace powered City to a 2-0 UEFA Champions League win over FC Porto.

After being denied twice in stunning fashion by Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa during the opening 45 minutes, Haaland found a way through after the break, heading home from a curling cross delivered by Fernandez.

Our talisman added a memorable second in stoppage time, moving past Tommy Johnson into third place on our all-time top scorers list with 167 goals and drawing level with Sergio Aguero’s Manchester City Champions League return of 35 goals for the Blues in the competition.

Fernandez, who joined on deadline day, had plenty of praise for his new team-mate following another match-winning performance.

“Haaland is an animal, a beast,” he said in an interview after the match. “Every time I’m on the pitch, I will look for him.

“Hopefully I can give him more assists.

“Haaland is not only a great player but also an amazing human being, and he welcomed me here and has helped me.

“I’m so happy. They welcomed me from the very first minute when I walked through the door. They are not just brilliant players, they are amazing human beings as well, and they have all been so kind to me.

“The fans have been absolutely brilliant and this is a new step in my career. I’m so excited to get going.”

The Argentine midfielder had previously flourished under Enzo Maresca during their time together at Chelsea, and Fernandez is determined to repay the new City manager with his performances on the pitch.

“I’m so happy that Maresca did everything he could to make this move possible,” he continued. “I know him so well from Chelsea.”

“I’m so grateful. I will give 100% in every training session and in every match to repay him.”
