Israel and Britain are heading for a fresh diplomatic clash. Israel on Tuesday announced plans to close Britain’s consulate in East Jerusalem. It also unveiled several other measures against the UK. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the move was a response to Britain’s decision to impose sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. According to Reuters, Saar said the British consulate would be closed after London announced an import ban on goods from Israeli settlements. The consulate is accredited to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.
Britain Barred From Gaza Coordination Mission
Israel also announced restrictions on Britain’s role in Gaza- efforts. Saar said Britain would no longer be allowed to take part in the US-led coordination mission for Gaza. Israel will also end British training of Palestinian Authority forces in the West Bank. Israel further plans to block 12 elected UK officials from entering the country. Saar said other British citizens could also face restrictions if they were “involved in antisemitic and anti-Israel activity.”
Why Did Britain Impose Settlement Sanctions?
Britain, France, Canada and 12 other countries recently announced measures targeting imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Britain said it would also target companies and individuals linked to settlement expansion.
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told the House of Commons, “So I can announce today that we will introduce an import ban on goods from illegal settlements in the occupied territories.”
He added, “Settlements are illegal. They should not be promoted in our country.”
Miliband also described the situation in parts of the West Bank as ethnic cleansing.
Israel Accuses UK Of Anti-Israel Policy
The economic impact of the import ban is expected to be limited. Israeli settlements produce relatively few exports, with agriculture making up a major share. However, the decision carries political significance. It reflects growing concern among some of Israel’s Western allies over settlement expansion.
Miliband said he felt “a deep sense of shame” over the situation in Palestine. Israel’s response also came after Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for the immediate expulsion of the British ambassador. President Isaac Herzog separately accused Britain of interfering in Israel’s upcoming elections, scheduled for late October.
