Manchester United have landed a major coup over their fiercest rivals by prising one of Liverpool’s most highly regarded academy prospects away from Anfield. The Red Devils have finalised a deal for teenage winger Isaac Konde, underlining once again their determination to bring in some of the brightest young talents in English football.

Crossing the divide

Manchester United are set to inflict a significant setback on Liverpool by securing the signing of highly rated academy youngster Isaac Konde. As per Fabrizio Romano, the agreement has been completed and will see the 16-year-old leave Merseyside for Manchester.

The adaptable winger, who mainly plays on the left side, had already moved quickly through the ranks at Liverpool. Even though he does not turn 17 until next month, Konde had already become part of the club’s Under-18 setup.

He will now join United’s youth structure. The teenager will be keen to make an immediate impression under Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher.

Senior squad imbalances

Although the Old Trafford decision-makers have clearly made youth recruitment a priority, their broader transfer approach this summer has prompted some questions. The senior midfield has been reshaped considerably, with Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba all arriving to strengthen that department.

That spending in midfield, however, appears to have come without similar attention being given to the defence. Left-back remains an obvious issue, with Luke Shaw currently the only natural candidate for a regular starting role.

Because of that, United could end up leaning on some of their development-focused signings to cover first-team shortages. Paraguayan youth international Diego Leon, who was initially signed as one for the future, may have to be moved quickly into senior involvement if injuries affect the fragile backline.

A broader recruitment strategy

Konde’s expected move forms part of a wider push to take elite academy players from domestic competitors. United have already had success in this area after bringing Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi out of Arsenal’s youth system.

The signing of Heaven has turned out especially well. Since joining from north London last February, the 19-year-old defender has made a smooth step into first-team football. He has already collected 25 senior appearances, including 22 in the Premier League.

Obi’s path, though, shows how uncertain youth development can be. After making eight senior appearances in the 2024-25 season, the Danish forward lost momentum last term. He has since joined Dutch club Willem II on loan for the current campaign in an effort to regain his progress.

Pushing for a breakthrough

For Konde, the immediate task will be to settle into his new surroundings and show what he can do within Fletcher’s academy system. If he adapts quickly, he could rise through the youth levels at pace over the coming months.

At the same time, United will keep a close watch on the development of their young recruits from around the world. Along with Obi’s spell in the Eredivisie, 20-year-old Malian midfielder Sekou Kone has also been sent on a season-long loan to Swiss side Lausanne-Sport to pick up valuable senior experience.
