CHENNAI:
A Malaysia Airlines flight bound for Jeddah from Kuala Lumpur was diverted to Chennai on Monday after developing a technical problem involving its second engine, prompting authorities to declare a full emergency at Chennai airport.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH 156, carrying 186 people, landed safely in Chennai after the diversion. Emergency response arrangements were activated at the airport as a precaution, officials said.
The airport authorities were alerted after the aircraft reported a technical issue involving Engine No. 2.
The aircraft was subsequently moved to a parking bay with the assistance of an aircraft tow vehicle. Passengers were provided accommodation at the airport while technical teams began examining the aircraft.
An airport spokesperson said further assessment of the aircraft and the technical problem was being carried out by the airline and relevant technical teams.
Despite the emergency declaration and diversion, the aircraft landed without incident and there were no reports of injuries among the passengers or crew.
Airport operations in Chennai remained normal following the incident.
The diversion came amid heightened attention to aircraft safety and emergency preparedness, with airport emergency teams and other agencies responding promptly to the situation.
