Aadhaar Registration Process for Newborns: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issues a 12-digit Aadhaar card to every citizen of the country. The Aadhaar card issued to children under the age of five is known as 'Baal Aadhaar' and is blue in color.
For Baal Aadhaar, the child's biometric data—such as fingerprints or iris scans—is not collected; instead, it is linked to the child's photograph and the Aadhaar details of one of the parents. Baal Aadhaar is a highly useful document for school admissions, availing benefits of government schemes, and serving as proof of identity.
Documents Required for Baal Aadhaar:
Child's birth certificate, hospital discharge slip, or any valid proof establishing the relationship; Aadhaar card or any valid identity proof of either the mother or father; passport or other valid proof of the parent to verify the child's current residential address; and birth certificate or other acceptable documents to record the child's correct date of birth.
How to Apply for Baal Aadhaar?
Visit the official UIDAI portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) and book an appointment at your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Visit the Aadhaar center on the scheduled date with the child and their birth certificate. For children under five, fingerprints and iris scans are not collected; only a digital photograph of the child is taken. The child's Aadhaar will be linked to the parent's Aadhaar. New enrollment for Baal Aadhaar is completely free of charge.
Don't Forget to Upgrade When the Child Turns Five:
Once the child completes five years of age, it is mandatory to update their biometric data—specifically, the fingerprints of all ten fingers, iris scans, and a photograph. This update is provided free of charge for children between the ages of 5 and 7.
