New Delhi:- On the instructions of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Public Health Department has further strengthened the system of TB testing in nutritional rehabilitation centers for timely detection of TB among malnourished children in the state and to provide them appropriate treatment.
Various measures are being taken in the state to identify, treat and prevent childhood TB, which is a major cause of malnutrition. As per the instructions of the Chief Minister's Secretariat dated November 2, 2015, the Health Department is working on various programs to the health of women and children.
Availability of standard methodology, training, testing facilities and medicines has been ensured for TB screening, diagnosis and treatment of children admitted in nutritional rehabilitation centres.
Examination of 2,835 children by July 2026
The children's symptoms and history of contact with a TB patient are examined. As per need, children are connected to facilities like sample collection, CB-NAT, TrueNAT test and chest X-ray.
Out of 29,875 children admitted in nutrition rehabilitation centers from 2021 to July 2026, 26,857 were tested for TB, which is 89.9 percent. At the same time, out of 3,017 children admitted till July 2026, 94 percent i.e. 2,835 were examined. Treatment of 23 children started in 2022, which reduced to 7 in 2025 and to 3 by July 2026.
Emphasis on child TB prevention
Contact tracing is being strengthened at home and NRC level to provide TB preventive treatment to children who came in contact with TB patients but are asymptomatic. The process of setting up a Center of Excellence for Child TB for complex and drug-resistant cases is underway.
The work of linking investigation information to Nikshay portal is also going on. Children suffering from TB are being connected with nutritional support through Nikshay Nutrition Scheme and Nikshay Mitra.
TrueNat and CB-Nat machines will be expanded near nutrition rehabilitation centers with high patient load. This will reduce the time of investigation and delay in treatment.
The emphasis will be on maintaining TB testing levels above 90 percent in all NRCs, completing testing of remaining children, providing preventive treatment to eligible children and strengthening coordination between the Health Department, Women and Child Development Department and the National TB Eradication Programme.
