Hariram Bansal, the owner of the hostel building that fell in Satya Niketan, Delhi, has been detained by the police from Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. Hariram was absconding since the accident. The police had also issued a lookout notice to search for him. At present the police is interrogating him by taking him into custody. Police have registered a case against building owner Hariram Bansal and others at South Campus police station. Action has been taken against the accused under other sections including culpable homicide, negligence in maintenance of the building and endangering the safety of people.
According to the police, the building that collapsed in Satya Niketan was being used as a paying guest (PG). It is alleged that at the time of the accident, repair work was going on in the basement of the building, after which the building collapsed. While investigating the case, the police was also keeping an eye on the building owner Hariram. Delhi Police had formed 10 teams to search for Hariram. Apart from Delhi, police teams were raiding possible targets in many states. Now the police has taken Hariram into custody from Bhiwadi, Rajasthan.
7 students have died so far
After the accident in Satya Niketan, relief and rescue operations are going on continuously. So far 12 people have been pulled out of the debris, out of which seven students have been confirmed dead. Rescue operations are ongoing as some people are feared still trapped under the debris. Along with Delhi Police, many agencies including NDRF, Delhi Fire Department and DDMA are engaged in relief and rescue work on the spot. This building suddenly collapsed in Satya Niketan at around 1.30 pm on Sunday afternoon. Many students were present in the building at the time of the accident.
As soon as the information about the building collapse was received, the local people reached the spot and not only informed the police but also helped in the relief work. After this, teams of Delhi Police, NDRF and other agencies reached the spot and started searching for the people trapped in the debris. The rescue operation is being carried forward under the supervision of officials.
First major action after the accident
After the Satya Niketan accident, the Delhi government has taken the first major action at the administrative level. On the instructions of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, five MCD officials, including a Deputy Commissioner, were suspended on Monday. According to the Chief Minister's Office, the suspended officers include Deputy Commissioner, Executive Engineer (EE), Superintending Engineer (SE), Assistant Engineer (AE) and Junior Engineer (JE). Earlier, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the incident site for the second consecutive day on Monday and took stock of the relief and rescue operations going on at the spot. He also took information from the officials about the accident and the action taken so far.
