Coconut is used in most every kitchen in many dishes including chutneys, vegetables, sweets. Sometimes excess coconut is left over and kept in the fridge. But if not stored properly, the coconut starts to go rancid in just two-three days, may change color and become unusable. If you also want to keep chopped coconut fresh for a long time, it is very important to know the right way to store it.
How to keep a whole coconut? If the coconut is still whole and yet to be cracked, there is no need to refrigerate it immediately. Whole coconuts should be kept in a place that does not get direct sunlight and not too much heat. Whole coconut can remain usable for a long time if properly stored in a cool and dry place. On the other hand, keeping the coconut in a warm place or in direct sunlight can increase the chances of it spoiling from the inside. Once the coconut is cracked, it is better to store it in the fridge instead of keeping it at room temperature for a long time. The storage process should start after separating the coconut from its shell and cleaning it properly.
Correct way to store shredded coconut in the fridge:After cracking the coconut, first separate its shell. After that, clean the coconut well with plain water and dry it by removing the excess water. Now cut the coconut into required size pieces and fill it in a clean and dry glass airtight container. After closing the container well, keep it in the fridge. Leaving coconut flakes uncovered in the fridge can expose them to air and moisture, which can cause them to dry out or change color. So it is important to use an airtight container. If there is some leftover coconut especially for a chutney or other dish, it should be well packed and kept in the fridge instead of keeping it on an open plate. It is also necessary to check and inspect the coconut once before use.
For longer storage, use the freezer:If the coconut is to be stored for more than a few days, it can be shredded or shredded and placed in a zip-lock bag. Then keeping it in the freezer can help extend its shelf life. As much coconut as required can be extracted and used. In this way, even if more coconuts are bought at once, its wastage can be avoided. However, it is important to check the quality of coconut before using it even after storing it in the fridge or freezer. Do not use coconut if it has an unusual taste or smell, is discolored, has become too greasy, or has fungus-like spots on it. Properly cleaning and storing in an airtight container can help keep coconuts in good condition for longer.
