Something remarkable unfolded in the Eredivisie on Sunday. A goalkeeper getting on the scoresheet is always notable, but Ronald Koeman Jr did it twice for Telstar in their match against Cambuur.
His father and namesake Ronald Koeman was well known for scoring goals, particularly for a player with defensive responsibilities, but Koeman Jr has taken that reputation a step further. He had already opened his account for Telstar towards the end of last season from the penalty spot after becoming the team’s designated taker.
What happened on Sunday, though, was on a completely different level. Telstar were awarded two penalties against Cambuur, and Koeman converted both of them.
His two goals helped Telstar fight back from 2-0 down to snatch a draw. In fact, the second penalty came as the equaliser in the 11th minute of stoppage time at the end of the match.
On both occasions, Koeman aimed for the bottom-right corner. The opposing goalkeeper guessed correctly for the first penalty, but was sent the wrong way for the second.
It was a display of extraordinary composure. Goalkeepers are usually associated with penalties because they are trying to save them, not score them, which made Koeman’s feat all the more striking.
Koeman is not the only goalkeeper known for scoring penalties. Rogerio Ceni, for instance, built a habit of doing so during his career in Brazil with Sao Paulo.
Hamburg goalkeeper Hans Jorg Butt is another example, having scored two penalties in a single game back in 1999.
So while Koeman has not achieved something entirely unique, he has certainly produced something exceptionally rare.
He finished one goal short of equalling a world record, with Jose Luis Chilavert having scored a hat-trick of penalties for Velez Sarsfield in a 2000 victory over Ferro in Argentina.
Of course, even a team being awarded three penalties in one match is uncommon, so that record is likely to remain intact for quite some time.
It may also be a long while before anyone repeats what Koeman managed on Sunday. Simply incredible.
