The Premier League served up another dramatic weekend as the new season continued to take shape.

Alexander Isak made a major statement for Liverpool with a superb brace, while Arsenal’s key players rose to the occasion in a tightly contested meeting with Chelsea. Elsewhere, there were eye-catching displays from new signings and unexpected heroes right across the division.

David Raya was outstanding after being left exposed for Chelsea’s early opener. The Arsenal goalkeeper regularly eased pressure with authoritative claims from crosses and alert sweeping off his line. His late save from Estevao secured Arsenal’s point, a brilliant stop that carried the value of a goal.

It was an impressive first full appearance for the loanee, who appears to have solved Liverpool’s problem position at right-back. Liverpool looked much more secure with Araujo in the side, and the Uruguayan dominated his individual battles. One particularly fine recovery challenge prevented Ipswich from scoring with a simple tap-in.

Hull have caught everyone by surprise with an unbeaten start and fought their way to another clean sheet against Aston Villa. John Egan embodied a Hull side that are yet to concede a goal this season, producing a brilliant block to deny Ross Barkley and an excellent tackle to halt George Hemmings.

Brighton feel they may have pulled off a major coup by signing Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham this summer.

The Croatian was excellent in the draw with Leeds, giving his team real authority in both penalty areas. His first Brighton goal earned his side a point, though the standout moment was a lovely Cruyff turn to escape pressure. The youngster looks destined for the top.

Tyrick Mitchell is not known for scoring regularly, but he struck twice as Crystal Palace edged a London derby at Fulham. Mitchell created his own fortune for the second after taking his first with real composure. He was Palace’s most reliable attacking outlet throughout from wing-back.

He already looks as though he has been part of Manchester City’s midfield for years. Anderson arrived with huge pressure because of his hefty price tag and Rodri’s departure, but he controlled matters against Coventry this weekend.

He led his side for touches (176), entries into the final third (21), fouls won (3) and interceptions (2), while also recording 92.3% pass accuracy. Bigger challenges are still to come, but this was highly encouraging.

The Arsenal captain needed a strong start to the season, and that is exactly what he has delivered. Odegaard has now scored three times in four matches at the start of the campaign after netting an emphatic winner against Chelsea this weekend. The Norwegian’s fierce finish past Emi Martinez was the defining moment of an excellent display in which he consistently found passes that troubled the visitors.

He seems to have earned David Moyes’ trust after a bright opening to the season. George got the better of Diogo Dalot while operating on the left, before moving to the right and scoring a stunning first Everton goal. His thunderous finish reflected his growing confidence.

Cody Gakpo is playing like a man with something to prove at Liverpool after coming close to leaving the club this summer. The Dutch forward made it three assists in three Premier League matches by setting up Alexander Isak’s two goals at Ipswich.

Gakpo’s first assist was drilled neatly into Isak, before he produced a gorgeous outside-of-the-boot pass for the second. That understanding between the pair is developing nicely.

He continues to repay Mikel Arteta’s faith as Arsenal’s first-choice forward. Havertz hurt former club Chelsea with a sharp finish inside Emi Martinez’s near post, before a clever step-over sent Martin Odegaard through on goal for Arsenal’s second.

The German is not a conventional centre-forward, but three goals in four games suggest he is capable of leading the line.

Could this be Alexander Isak’s true arrival at Liverpool? Nobody will want to get too carried away after a brace against Ipswich, but there was plenty to admire at Portman Road. His brilliant double inside the opening nine minutes effectively ended the contest, with Isak showing flashes of his old self.
