The UN General Assembly has declared November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage, with India among 70 co-sponsors. The Sierra Leone-led resolution was adopted by consensus on Friday. The date coincides with India’s Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat campaign launched in 2024 to combat child marriage nationwide.
India has co-sponsored a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly declaring Nov 27 every year as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.
The 193-member General Assembly adopted the Sierra Leone-led resolution, titled International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage, by consensus on Friday. India was among around 70 nations backing the initiative.
Nov 27 Coincides With India's Campaign
The date holds significance for India as the Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat, or Child Marriage Free India, campaign was launched on Nov 27, 2024. The initiative aims to reduce the prevalence of child marriage by 10% by 2026 and make India child marriage-free by 2030.
