Satara: Praveen Kamble of Sangli won the men's category title in the 15th Satara Hill Half Marathon after overcoming the tough climb of Yavateswar, the test of speed on the downhill and the dynamism required to overtake his rivals in the final stages. Praveen dominated the race by completing the distance of 21 km in about 1 hour and 5 minutes. In the women's category, Rani Sadashiv Uttande of Sangli district secured the top position by recording a time of around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The competition organized by Satara Runners Foundation sponsored by Puneet Balan was flagged off by District Collector Santosh Patil from Police Drill Ground at 6.30 am on Sunday morning. On the occasion of the 15th year of the competition, around 10,000 runners, including runners from home and abroad, participated. It was said that the organizers are in the process of recording this record participation in the Guinness World Records.

Patience at first; Pravin's speed in the return phase

Praveen Kamble kept the pace from the start of the race, predicting the conditions without aggressive pace. Praveen, who maintained his strength on the Yavateshwar climb, picked up the pace in the retreat phase. He maintained his lead over his rivals till the end and sealed the title. A graduate of Kolhapur University, Praveen is currently preparing for police recruitment. This success in Satara Hill Marathon has also given a new direction to his running career.

Rani's winning run in the very first appearance

In the women's category, Rani Sadashiv Uttande from Kolgare in Jat taluka of Sangli district topped the maiden Satara Hill Half Marathon. In the decisive stage of the second stage, about five and a half kilometers, Rani increased the pace and took the lead and held it till the end. Rani is from Koregaon. P. Bhosle is a college student and has a fifth place finish in the university level marathon competition in China. Rani, who has participated in various national marathons, is currently practicing at Pune-Balevadi.

Yavateswar ghat conducted the test of runners

After completing the first leg from Police Drill Ground to Prakriti Hill Resort via Powai Naka, Shivtirth, Shahu Chowk, Bogda and Yavateshwar Ghat, the runners had to travel back by the same route. The 21 km race was a real test for the runners due to the uphill climb, the subsequent downhill and the battle of speed in the final stage.

Satarkar's enthusiasm with two-way applause

Satarkars thronged the main roads of the city during the race which started in the cool early morning. Cheering applause, encouragement given by announcements and helping points set up at various places boosted the spirits of the runners. Citizens also enthusiastically welcomed the runners in the Power House area.

Sunidhi in Paithani became the attraction

Sunidhi Gaikwad from Hadapsar attracted the attention of the audience by participating in the marathon wearing traditional Paithni. Around 50 runners from Hadapsar's Blue Nature Group also participated in the competition. Male and female runners of various age groups participated and conveyed the message of fitness.

The message of 'Peace and Harmony'

The slogan of this year's tournament was 'Peace and Harmony'. Accordingly, symbolic paintings conveying the message of peace and reconciliation were erected on the police drill ground.

QR code to help runners

A special QR code was developed by Azar Company for the safety of runners. After scanning the code, the location of the runner as well as the facility of message delivery to the nearest picking point was provided. This system will be useful for getting immediate help in emergency situations. Meanwhile, a 64-year-old runner from Mumbai suddenly felt dizzy near the municipal office while finishing the race. He was immediately admitted to a private hospital.

Traffic was diverted to the tunnel area

Necessary planning was done by district administration, district police, Satara municipality and revenue department in the background of the marathon. Police deployment was kept at various places along the 21 km route. Traffic in the tunnel area was diverted to an alternative route for some time. Satara Runners Association Dr. Sandeep Kate, Shailesh Dhavalikar, Dr. Prataparao Gole and members of the coordination committee were present. Organizers said that the process is underway to register the participation of ten thousand runners in the Guinness World Record.
