New Delhi. To reduce dependence on China, India has taken a big step towards securing the supply of rare earth elements. For this, talks between India and Myanmar regarding mining and purchase of these important minerals have intensified.
In the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing, along with trade, the supply of important minerals was also discussed. India wants to secure these minerals for itself, so that dependence on other countries can be reduced for essential industries.
Why are rare earth minerals important?
Rare earth elements are used in mobile phones, electric vehicles, solar panels, wind turbines and modern defense equipment. China has a major share in the global supply of these minerals. In such a situation, after China increased the export ban, it has become very important for India to find alternative sources.
Myanmar is the world's leading producer of these minerals, so India is eyeing the resources present there. This initiative is also considered important under the National Critical Mineral Mission of India.
India's path will not be easy
However, there are many difficulties in obtaining minerals from Myanmar. Mining areas are inaccessible and transportation facilities are limited. Apart from this, conflict is also going on between the army and rebel organizations in some areas.
In such circumstances, safe extraction of minerals and transporting them to India will be a big challenge. If India successfully pursues this plan, it can be of great help in reducing strategic dependence on China.
