PCB signals possible January–February comeback for PSL in 2027

Pakistan Cricket Board may be looking at the January and February window for the Pakistan Super League 2027. Cricinfo reported that the proposal was made during a governing council meeting on 1st September 2026 in London.

The move was proposed by Walee Technologies, the official media rights holder of the league. The revenue generated in the April-May window wasn’t high as the dates collided with the Ramadan period.

The last few seasons have seen the tournament clash with the Indian Premier League, which is held from March to May. The clash of the leagues has also seen players like Blessing Muzarabani, who were earlier contracted to the PSL, head over to the IPL as a replacement player.

The Zimbabwe pacer was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman just before the 19th season. The seamer was banned by the PCB for not honouring his PSL contract. If the league does head back to its original schedule, then players could be part of both leagues.

In 2025, the tournament was held in a different window because Pakistan were hosting the Champions Trophy. The league faced issues in 2026 when the West Asia conflict restricted the tournament to Karachi and Lahore without fans. The cricket fans were allowed into the stadium for the final at the Gaddafi Stadium.

PSL likely to face more challenges

If the league does head back to the start of the year from 2027 onwards, then it could face stiff competition from the Big Bash League and SA20. The BBL, which begins in December, runs up to the end of January.

In the same vein, the South African league begins in January and goes on till the first or second week of February. This would mean some of the best available overseas talents would have to make up their minds on which tournament they want to be part of.

PCB will have to deal with harsh winters in Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi. There was a proposal to start the PSL in Karachi before heading to other venues. Babar Azam’s side, Peshawar Zalmi, are the current champions, having beaten Hyderabad Kingsmen in the final.
