Persistent tiredness, weakness or frequent muscle cramps can sometimes point to low magnesium levels, although these symptoms can have several other causes. Health experts say understanding why magnesium levels fall is as important as addressing the deficiency itself.
Magnesium quietly supports vital body functions
Magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzyme systems and helps the body maintain normal muscle and nerve function, energy production, blood glucose regulation and heartbeat. It also contributes to protein synthesis and bone health.
A short period of low dietary intake does not necessarily cause deficiency in healthy people because the kidneys can reduce magnesium loss through urine. However, prolonged inadequate intake or excessive losses can eventually affect magnesium levels.
Watch for these possible warning signs
Early symptoms may include loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue and weakness. As deficiency becomes more pronounced, people may experience muscle cramps, twitching, tingling or numbness. Severe deficiency can cause seizures or abnormal heart rhythms.
Importantly, tiredness and cramps do not by themselves confirm magnesium deficiency. Similar symptoms can occur with several other health conditions.
Your diet can provide useful magnesium
For many people, magnesium-rich foods can be part of a balanced diet. Nuts, seeds, beans, pulses, whole grains and green leafy vegetables are useful sources. Indian meals can include foods such as dal, chana, rajma, leafy vegetables and whole grains.
Supplements need medical guidance
Low magnesium can sometimes be linked to gastrointestinal disorders, chronic diarrhoea, poorly controlled diabetes, excessive alcohol use or certain medicines, including some diuretics and long-term proton-pump inhibitors.
Doctors may recommend appropriate tests and treatment when deficiency is suspected. High-dose supplements are not suitable for everyone and can cause side effects, particularly in people with impaired kidney function.
