A significant update has emerged over the future of Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams, and it is one that could catch the attention of Manchester United.
United ended the summer transfer window without bringing in a left-back, despite the obvious need to strengthen that position. That requirement was highlighted even further by Luke Shaw’s difficulties during the 5-2 win over Ipswich Town.
The Red Devils looked at several possible options, but in the end, they did not make any firm move for any of them.
Among the names believed to have featured on the club’s shortlist were Lewis Hall of Newcastle, Jorge Salinas of Racing Santander, Myles Lewis-Skelly of Arsenal, David Raum of RB Leipzig and Williams.
A previous report carried by The Peoples Person stated that United admire Williams and were interested in bringing him in despite his previous association with Liverpool. However, it was also suggested that new Forest manager Oliver Glasner was standing in the way of any possible move to Old Trafford.
Following Forest’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, Williams was questioned about his future and gave a strong indication that he was happy and settled at the City Ground.
According to TEAMtalk, the 25-year-old was open to the possibility of joining United and testing himself at a higher standard.
However, The Telegraph now report that he is on course to remain at Forest for longer.
The newspaper says, “Nottingham Forest are close to agreeing a new contract with Neco Williams after an atypically quiet summer.”
“Williams is in advanced talks over a four-year extension in a move which will be a significant boost for Oliver Glasner, Forest’s head coach.”
“Williams, whose current deal has two years left to run, is poised to commit his future to the club within the next few days.”
It is understood that Williams had also drawn interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.
