Why is Durva offered to Lord Ganesha?
In mythological beliefs, a story tells about the special relationship between Lord Ganesha and Durva. It is said that in ancient times, a powerful demon named Analasur used to trouble the gods and saints with his terror. Due to his fear there was unrest all around. Then everyone requested Lord Ganesha to end this crisis. It is believed that Ganapati defeated Analasur and swallowed him. The demon was destroyed, but after that Ganesh ji started feeling intense heat in his body. Many measures were taken, yet he did not get any relief. During this time the sages offered Durva grass to Lord Ganesha. It is said that consuming Durva calmed down his heat and gave him relief. Since then Durva started being considered among the favorite things of Ganapati and the tradition of offering it in his worship started.
21 What is the significance of Durva?
The tradition of offering 21 Durvas in Ganpati Puja is considered special. According to religious beliefs, the number 21 is considered a symbol of different elements to the body and nature. It includes five senses of knowledge, five senses of action, five pranas, five great spirits and mind.
How to offer Durva?
- While offering Durva to Lord Ganesha, it is considered auspicious to take clean and fresh Durva.
- Usually it is offered in the form of small bunches. During the puja, offer Durva while meditating on Lord Ganesha and pray for your wishes.
- It is believed that offering Durva to Lord Ganesha calms the devotee’s mind and grants the blessings of Lord Ganesha.
- This is the reason why this small looking grass has such great religious importance in Ganesh Puja.
