Indian Railways Luggage Rules: People are usually very mindful of luggage weight when traveling by air. However, when it comes to train travel, many assume that having a confirmed reservation ticket allows them to carry as much luggage as they wish. If you share this belief, take note.
In reality, just like airlines, Indian Railways has established specific limits for free luggage allowance based on the coach and class of travel. If an inspection reveals that your luggage exceeds the prescribed limit, you could face a hefty fine, even if you hold a confirmed ticket. While there is a slight margin of leniency for exceeding the limit by 10 to 15 kg, any excess beyond that requires you to book the extra luggage.
Find out the luggage allowance for each class:
Sleeper Class: You can carry up to 40 kg of luggage for free. 3rd AC: The free luggage limit is also set at 40 kg. 2nd AC: Passengers in 2nd AC can carry up to 50 kg of luggage without extra charges. 1st AC: In the premium 1st AC class, passengers are allowed a free luggage allowance of up to 70 kg.
What to do if you have excess luggage?
If you are carrying luggage beyond the prescribed limit, do not wait to be caught by the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner). Instead, visit the luggage or parcel office at the railway station before your journey begins and book the excess luggage. You will be required to pay a nominal, prescribed fee. If you are found traveling with luggage exceeding the limit without having booked it, railway rules allow for a penalty of up to six times the standard rate.
If you are traveling with the elderly or small children, try to travel light. Handling heavy luggage amidst the crowds at railway stations and on trains can be difficult. If you are moving house or transporting heavy commercial goods, book and send them via the railway's parcel service instead of carrying them in the passenger compartment. This is a very safe and cost-effective method.
