UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase draw: Roma paired with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea; Juventus draw PSG and Lyon; Inter to face Arsenal and Manchester City

Italian women’s football will reach a historic landmark when the UEFA Women’s Champions League begins on 22 and 23 September, with three Serie A Women clubs featuring in the league phase. The draw held today in Nyon has mapped out the route for Roma and Juventus, both placed in pot two, as well as Inter, who were in pot three. For the second straight season, the Women’s Champions League will use the same format as the men’s competition: one single league table made up of 18 teams, with each side playing six matches, three at home and three away, against six different opponents, two from each pot.

Juventus, Inter and Roma’s opponents

As they await the full fixture list, which will be finalised in the coming hours, Italian champions Roma now know they will host Barcelona, Real Madrid and Servette, while travelling to Chelsea, where former Giallorossa player Giulia Dragoni has been playing in recent weeks, as well as Benfica and Leuven. One notable detail is that four of their six opponents — Barcelona, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Leuven — are the same as last season. Juventus, meanwhile, will play Lyon, Benfica and Leuven at home, and will travel to Paris Saint-Germain, Hacken and Austria Vienna. Their meetings with Lyon and Benfica will be repeats of last season. Inter, fresh from their remarkable achievement against Wolfsburg and preparing for their league phase debut, face the hardest challenge after coming from pot three: they will welcome Arsenal, Hacken and Manchester City, and will travel to Lyon, Real Madrid and Austria Vienna.

The format

At the end of the six matchdays, the top four teams will qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The sides finishing from fifth to 12th place will then contest the knockout phase play-offs to decide the remaining four quarter-final berths.
