Due to accumulation of water in the fridge
Water accumulation under the vegetable tray of the refrigerator is a common problem in many homes. Often people ignore it, seeing it as water released from vegetables. But if this problem is happening again and again, it is not appropriate to ignore it.
The reasons for this could be the drainage system of the fridge, rubber seal of the door, wrong setting of temperature or excess moisture inside. The good news is that in some cases the problem can be resolved with a simple check and cleaning.
1. Check the drain hole
Blocking of the drain hole can be a major reason for water accumulation at the bottom of the vegetable tray. There is a small hole at the back of the fridge, which lets water out during defrost.
If food particles, dust or snow accumulate in this hole, water starts collecting inside the fridge instead of flowing out.
After safely turning off the refrigerator, the dirt around the drain hole can be cleaned. Light lukewarm water can help in cleaning it. Do not use a knife or sharp object to remove ice.
2. Condition of door rubber seal
If the refrigerator door is not closing completely, warm and moist air from outside can get in. When it comes to a cold surface it turns into moisture.
Check the condition of the rubber seal around the door. If it is dirty, loose, torn, or bent, the door will not close properly.
Clean the seal with mild soap and water. A paper test can also be done. Close the door by placing paper between the door and the rubber. If the paper comes off easily, the seal may be weak.
3. Checking the temperature setting
Water or ice may also accumulate if the refrigerator temperature is too low or too high. Normally, the temperature of the fridge should be around 4 degrees Celsius.
At very low temperatures, ice can freeze in some parts, which can later melt and form water. On the other hand, cooling and humidity control may be affected at higher temperatures.
So, first of all check the temperature setting of the fridge.
4. Do not put hot food in the refrigerator immediately
If you put hot food in the refrigerator immediately, it can cause moisture inside to increase. The steam coming out of hot food cools down and turns into water droplets.
If this happens again and again, condensation inside the fridge can increase and water can collect around the vegetable tray.
Let the food cool and then cover it and keep it in the refrigerator. Keeping open utensils can also increase moisture.
5. Don't overfill the fridge
Do not fill the refrigerator with items in such a way that there is no space left for air. There should be enough space between the vegetable tray and the wall of the refrigerator.
Also, avoid placing items in front of the air vent, so that the cool air can circulate properly.
6. Check water source
If your refrigerator has a water dispenser or ice maker, check the water pipes and connections.
If there is a minor leakage in any pipe or connection, water can slowly reach inside the refrigerator.
Therefore it is important to know from which part the water is actually coming.
7. When is a mechanic required?
If water is accumulating despite cleaning the drain hole, checking the door seal and adjusting the temperature, there may be a technical fault in the refrigerator.
In such a situation, there may be a problem with the drain system, defrost system, thermostat or water pipeline. It is better to get it checked by a qualified technician rather than trying to fix it yourself.
Don't just wipe if you see water
Seeing water once or twice under the vegetable tray of the refrigerator is not always a sign of a major problem. But if this problem is happening again and again, then it is important to know its reason.
First check the drain hole, door rubber seal, temperature setting, air circulation and possible water leakage. Recognizing small problems in time can prevent major breakdowns and costly repairs.
