Manchester United are expected to keep most of their recent starting XI intact when they take on Everton on Sunday.
The biggest doubt is over Luke Shaw, who is understood to be managing a minor hamstring problem. Noussair Mazraoui could come in for him if the England international does not come through a late fitness test.
Shaw has been seen training in pictures published on United’s official website, which offers some encouragement regarding his availability for the trip to Everton.
However, Premier Injuries rates the defender as having only a 25% chance of featuring and says he will face a late fitness test. Carrick may therefore need to make a final call on whether to take the risk with him or bring in Mazraoui instead.
Amad is still sidelined, while Mason Mount is expected to return to the matchday squad after his recent absence.
Matthijs de Ligt and Carlos Baleba remain unavailable, while Manuel Ugarte is set for a longer period out. Those absences limit Carrick’s options for rotation in defence and central midfield.
Lammens is expected to start in goal, behind a back four made up of Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.
Shaw should begin at left-back if he proves his fitness in time. If he is ruled out, the versatile Mazraoui is the leading option to slot into the defence. Patrick Dorgu and Harry Amass are also available as alternatives.
In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans are tipped to hold on to their places.
Mainoo looks impossible to leave out after his outstanding display against Ipswich. Away from Shaw’s fitness concerns, the most intriguing selection issue is whether Carrick goes with Tielemans or Santos. A difficult away match could persuade him to add more defensive cover alongside Mainoo.
Even so, the expectation is that Carrick will continue to back Tielemans. His range of passing and his ability to control possession make him the midfielder most suited to Carrick’s style in this system. The head coach should therefore see clear value in keeping him in the starting line-up.
Bryan Mbeumo is likely to continue on the right, particularly with Amad unavailable, although Shea Lacey is another possibility if the manager decides to use the Cameroonian through the middle. Bruno Fernandes will, naturally, play as the number 10, while Marcus Rashford is expected to start again from the left. Matheus Cunha is likely to keep the central attacking berth.
Benjamin Sesko is expected to start on the bench once again. The striker should get some minutes as a substitute, but Cunha currently seems the more likely option to be trusted from the first whistle.
Shaw’s late fitness assessment, if it is indeed required, is the main issue to watch before the teamsheet is finalised, although Carrick also has a genuine call to make regarding the balance of his midfield.
Mazraoui could come in for Shaw at left-back.
Tielemans is expected to get the nod ahead of Santos.
Cunha should spearhead the attack, with Sesko among the substitutes.
